Blog Post #52

"Down River"

If you were Tally, would you ask the Warden to make you pretty?

Yes because I would be helping all the uglies and pretties by being tested by the cure.

Blog Post #51

"Confessions"

Tally has finally come clean. Do you think she will regret it? Do you think David will change his mind on her?

No because if she had kept it bolted up inside she would still feel like a traitor. I don't think David will change his mind because he knows now is just probably angry because she didn't tell him sooner.

Blog Post #50

"Hippocratic Oath"

Should Maddy have forced Shay to take the "cure?" Why or why not?

No because if Shay had died then she would feel guilty. She doesn't want to be the kind of person who causes someone to die unwillingly.

Blog Post #49

"Night Alone"

If you were Shay, would you get the cure? Why or why not?

Yes because I would still remember about the Smoke and I would try to think back to all the memories I had.

Blog Post #48

"Get away"

Respond to the following quote from the chapter... what does it mean to you? "Tally thought of the lesions on Shay's brain, the tiny cancers or wounds or whatever they are that she didn't even know she had. They were in there somewhere changing her friend's thoughts, warping her feelings, gnawing at the roots of who she was."

I think it tells the process of how Shay is changing. It tells what's going on inside of Shay.

Blog Post #47

"Kicker"
Give a chronological list of important events in the chapter. What's the kicker at the end of the chapter?

1)Tally finds out about Shay's new life
2) Shay tells Tally what she's doing with Dr. Cable
3) David and Tally rescue the Smokies
4) Maddy tells David his dad is dead

David's dad is dead.

Blog Post #46

"Inside"

Is this quote a play on words, or does it have adeeper meaning to the story?
"Radiology. Neurology. Magnetic Imaging," she read softly. "Operating Theathre Two."

I think it's deeper because they sound so weird to me.They tell you about the steps in becoming a pretty.

What "labels" do Tally and David find in the Special Circumstances building? Give a BRIEF description of what you think each means.

Neurology- Something to do with your brain.
Radiology- X-rays or something like that
Magnetic Imaging- They turn your face into perfection
Operating Theathre Two- Redo operation to make it better

Describe Shay's appearance at the end of the chapter using textual evidence.

"She was tall and elegant, every feature perfection. Her eyes deep and soulful, thickened with copper and gold- widened with a trouble look. Her generous lips parted wordlessly, and she raised one graceful hand. Tally's heart almost stopped out of the beauty of her confusion"

Blog Post #45

"Over the Edge"

In this chapter a few uglies go to New Pretty Town to do a "trick." They make the words "THE SMOKE LIVES" with sparklers. If you had ONE chance to post a message important to you, what would it be and why?

I would post "LIVE YOUR LIFE THE WAY YOU WANT TO". I would post this because you should not let others tell you what to do except your parents.

Blog Post #44

"Accomplices"

The Uglies they met in this chapter are similar to Tally at the beginning of the book. When you compare her to these Uglies, how has Tally changed and what has made her change?

She has become more mature and has realized what the operation really does to you unlike when she was an ugly who only playes tricks and wanted to only be a pretty.

Blog Post #43

"Familiar Sights"

Do you think Tally's plan will work? David wants to save his parents, but what's driving Tally? Do you think she is crazy, or are her feelings valid?

I think her plan might work. I think Tally feels different towards the Smokies now so she wants to help them. I don't think she's crazy i just think that at first she was just confused.

Blog Post #42

"Oil Plague"

How do David and Tally describe the Rusties? Is it accurate?

They describe us as idiotic and they make us look bad. It's not accurate because we were trying to save the world.

What are weaknesses of OUR society?

We need to star taking care of our planet. We have to star recycling.

What are weaknesses of THEIR society?

They try so har to keep thing perfect. People are trying to change but they won't let them.

Blog Post #41

"Maddy and Az"

Find information and a picture about a time we weren't prepared.(i.e. a natural disaster or attack). Post the information and cite it.

"Katrina was the largest hurricane of its strength to approach the United States in recorded history; its sheer size caused devastation over 100 miles (160 kilometers) from the storm's center. The storm surge caused major or catastrophic damage along the coastlines of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, including the cities of Mobile, Ala., Biloxi and Gulfport, Miss., and Slidell, La."

Blog Post #40

"Ruin"

Describe the irony in Tally's "victory" over Dr.Cable. What was lost in the process?
When Tally ran away from Dr. Cable she left some friends behind to escape. Some people thought of her as a traitor and others were killed because of her.

Blog Post #39

"Amazing"

Is David right? Is Tally amazing? Do you think she should be feeling guilty? Why or why not?

I don't think Tally's amazing because she seems more like a traitor. I think she should feel guilty for lying.

Blog Post #38

"Run"

Who is the voice in the dark? Do you think it will be a friend or an enemy to Tally? What do you think Tally will do now?

I think it is David. I think Tally will rescue the Smokies or try to run away.

Blog Post #37

"In Case of Damage"

Explain what self preservation means to you. Is it the most important thing? Would you lie because of it?

It means doing whatever is possible to save yourself. It isn't the most important thing because if it was everyone would always lie. I might lie but not for something real big.

Blog Post #36

"The Rabbit Pen"

Tally had changed her mind about the smoke and the operation, but what will she do about all that now? Whose side is she on?

I think she is on the Smokes side. She will try to help the Smokies escape from Special Circumstances.

Blog Post #35

"Invasion"

Is this the climax of the book? Explain why or why not.

Yes because this is when all her lies catch up with her. She has put everyone in danger and now has to help them.

Blog Post #34

"Burning Bridges"

Read the following quote David says to Tally. "What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful." Name one person in your personal life, and one in your academic life...what makes this person beautiful?

Personal Life- My mom because she always thinks about the good things in people and is always being nice and helping people.

Academic- My friends because they're always with me. They make me feel special.

"The Secret"

What does the following quote tell you about the city and society in general?
"But you do know about genetics don't you? Sure i know all about genes. I knew two sister, uglies, who looked almost the same. But parents and children? That's just weird."

The doctors make the people look nothing like they would originally look if they were uglies so the kids look nothing like them.

Predict what you think being "pretty" is.

Where you are turned into something like a clueless and they make all your features perfect.

Blog Post #31

"Bravery"

Find an example of imagery, personification and simile. Quote directly and give page numbers.

Imagery- Tally deliverately turned her eyes away from him. In the valley below, the orchids glowed with pale malevolence in the moon light, a frozen sea agains the dark shore of the forest. pg.245
Simile- Like walking poison, she killed everything. pg.244
Personification-The warmth of his body cut the autumn chill, and she moved closer. pg.250

Does it require bravery to meet David's parents, why or why not?
Yes because it's weird to meet someones parents especially if that someone likes you.

Blog Post #30

"Suspicion"

Do you think Shay has a right to be jealous of Tally? Why or why not?

I don't really think she has a right to be jealous because its not really any ones fault. It's not Tally's fault or Shay's fault. Even if Tally told David "everything" he probably wouldn't care.

Tally received a gift from David in the chapter that is special. Have you ever received something that made others jealous as this gift did? Did your gift have a meaning behind it as Tally's had?

I've never had a gift that has made someone jealous. Most of my gifts haven't really had a meaning behind them unless it was for a special occasion like a holiday.

Blog Post #29

"Hearhrob"

Why would it have been easier for Tally to activate the pendant when she got to the smoke? Explain.

It would have been easier because she wouldn't really have felt like she was lying to everyone. She wouldn't have felt like she was taking away David's home or like she was betraying anyone.

Blog Post #28

"David"

If David's parents were doctors, Why do you think they ran away? Support your answer with textual evidence.

Maybe they found out something they weren't supposed to know.

" A shock ran through her. This was more stunning than the felled trees or the the cruel pretties; as overwhelming as anything she'd felt since Peris had gone away. They reversed the operation?" pg. 218

Blog Post #27

"Work"

Find an image of a skyline like the one Tally sees. Post it. What is beautiful about it? Is there anything ugly about it?

I chose this picture because the bridge in the middle reminds of when Tally says that some bridges tattle on you and how Uglyville and New Pretty Town are separated by a bridge. This picture is so beautiful the water seems so realistic. The lights are so breath taking.

Blog Post #26

"Lies"

What do you think about Shay's description of a model? Shay and Tally have a messed up view of our time, but what have they got right?

I think Shay is partially right about models they're job is kind of like she said being a professional pretty. They at least know about some of the sicknesses in our time and why some models were skinny.

Blog Post #25

"Lies"

Characterization of David : "He was an ugly. And his face held a kind of confidence that Tally had never seen in an ugly before.David was hardly a pretty."

Picture to represent "Smoke":

I chose this picture because it doesn't look high tech and it's kind of cloudy. There's not a lot of people outside.

Blog Post #24

"Bug Eyes"

List the important events in Chron. order.

1.) Some people find Tally
2) They give her oxygen
3) They explain why they were setting the forest on fire
4) They tell Tally what they are
5) The rangers find out about what Tally is going to do
6) They leave her on the "bald head"

Respond to the following quote: "...Tally was stuck out here in the wild forever. Ugly for life. Her only way home was to betray her friend."
I think this quote is saying that Tally has to make an important life choice which will lead her to being pretty or staying and ugly forever.

Blog Post #23

"Firestorm"

Give one example of each of these from the chapter: imagery, personification & simile.

Imagery: "Then a tearing noise filled the air, the crackle of dry brush inflamed, and the smell of smoke swept over Tally, bringing her suddenly and completely awake. " pg.172
Personification:
"There were a few spots burning on this side, but nothing like the galloping flame behind her" pg.173
Simile: "Her grippy shoes were ruined, their soles cracked like sunbaked mud, so she flew slowly, scooping up handfuls of water to soothe her burning face and arms." pg.174

Yeah. One time i felt too lazy to wake up but i knew if i didn't get out of bed my mommy would get mad at me for missing practice to i got up.

I think this huge machine is going to show up and something bad is going to happen to Tally's things.

Invent a dried food you would take with you on your journey if you were Tally. What would it be? How would you make it?
I would take with me this little container that when you open it up your dried food cooks itself with sunlight unvealing whatever you want.

Make a list of things you would miss about your home if you were forced to leave it as Tally was.
1) bed
2)roof
3)laptop
4)toilet
5)privacy

Blog Post#19

"Leaving"
Why do you think Tally ultimately decides to figure out where Shay is?

I think Tally goes looking for Shay because she feels like her promise to Peris is more important than her promise to Shay.

Give a chronological list of important events that happened in the chapter.
1)Tally tattles on Shay
2)Dr. Cable wants Tally to decipher the note Shay left behind
3)Dr. Cable tells Tally that this isn't the first time an ugly has left to the Smoke
4)Dr.Cable sends Tally looking for Shay

Blog Post#17

"Peris"
Why do you think Peris comes back?
I think Peris just wants to go to all the parties with Tally ,so he convinces her to keep her promise to him.

"But once you're across the river, just drop a few hints about special-you-know-what and you'll get invited to all the parties!Just make sure you take me with you."

Blog Post#16

"Ugly for life"

Respond to the following quote:
"Everywhere she went, eyes looked away. But it was the most visible she'd ever felt"

I think that Tally feels like everyone knows that she won't become an ugly. She feels that they don't look at her because they think they know her story and why she might not become a pretty.

Blog Post#15

"Special Circumstances"

Summarize the chapter highlighting the important events in chronological order. Predict what you think will happen next.
1)Tally meets a someone called Dr.Cable. Dr.Cable is someone who works in special circumstances
2) Tally wonders why she was sent to special circumstances
3) Dr.Cable tells Tally what Special Circumstances is all about
4) Tally finds out about some of Shay's past
5) Dr.Cable tells Tally that they want her to tell her where Shay is so the can keep everyone safe
6) Tally tell Dr.Cable that she will keep her promise to her friend Shay
7) Dr.Cable tells Tally that if she doesn't tell her where Shay is she will never become a pretty

I think Tally might try to bring back Shay ,so she can become an ugly.

Characterization of Dr.Cable:
A cruel pretty with sharp teeth and a pointy nose.
A pretty with a sharp, cold look to her.
Her eyes are lighter than a normal uglies'.

1) Tally turns sixteen
2) Tally packs a duffelbag with some of her belongings so she can take them to New Pretty Town
3) Tally feels strange being independent for the first time
4) Tally rides on a helicopter over to New Pretty Town where she will have the operation
5) Tally waits for the doctors to start the operation
6)The doctors tell her that there is a problem with her operation

I think the doctors are going to tell her that she can't be turned into a pretty because of a certain problem.

"Last Trick" p.85

Respond to the following quote, what does it mean to you?
"We don't have to look like everyone else, Tally, and act like everyone else. We've got a choice. We can grow up any way we want"

Shay is kind of telling Tally that they can make choices and not let themselves be copycats like everyone else. Shay wants to persuade Tally to be different from the world that it's okay not being like the rest of the world. Shay is telling Tally that not making the same choices or dressing and acting different is a way that you can be if you want to. Shay wants Tally to express herself.

Blog Post#13

"Fight" p.76

Two fights were presented in this chapter. Compare and Contrast both of them. List their similarities and differences. Why did each take place? What was the outcome of each one?(no less than one paragraph)

The first fight was just made up because Tally and Shay thought that they were like so cool so they decided to play a senior prank on the new uglies just to have fun. The second fight happened because Shay kept on telling Tally that she might not want to become a pretty and they say words that they don't mean. Both of them are alike because they seemed real and were between Tally and Shay. They're different because one was just a prank for the new uglies while the other was an argument about Shay becoming a pretty.

"Waiting for David"

What does the following quote from the chapter tell you about the city?
"That was one thing about being outside the city; it made all that nature stuff they taught in school seem a lot more useful. She remembered now how rainwater fell on the mountains and soaked into the ground..."

I think that their world is so advanced that they barely have any time to look at nature. They probably ignore nature and treat it as if it were nothing. In their world they probably don't have anything that's natural.

1) Tally and Shay decide to go visit the Rusty Ruins outside of town.
2) Tally looks back on everything that had happened back in our time.
3) Tally finds out about a rollercoaster.
4) Shay makes Tally promise to keep a very importan secret.

Find two similes in this chapter and quote them, as well as the page number.
1)The Rusties had been been stuck down in this streets, like a hord of rats trapped in a burning maze. pg.61
2)The Rustie's didn't put their factories underground and they all worked together like bees in a hive instead of at home. pg.62
3)Every building sported jagged spurs of metal sticking form its broken walls, like bones from a long dead animal. pg.62

Blog Post #10

"Rapids"p.53
In this chapter Tally says, "I kind of like being fooled about some things." Do you agree with Tally, or would you rather know the reality behind everything? Why?
I disagree with Tally because if I didn't know the reality behind everything i wouldn't know who to believe and who not to believe. It's sort of like if city officials lied to you about a murderer killing the people when they're the ones killing the people.

White water rafting: It is interesting to note that whitewater rafting was one of the earliest forms of transportation. It was not only used for carrying people but also for transferring goods from one place to another. However, it became quite popular as a form of leisure activity in the 1980s.

Blog Post #9

"Pretty Boring" p.46

Describe the Rusty Ruins. What are they? What happened during this time period?
The Rusty Ruins are the remains of an old city. At this time there were way too many people, everyone was ugly, and people would kill each other because of their skin.

Define peer pressure. Think of a time when it happened to you or someone you know and explain the situation in a paragraph.
When i was younger my brother told me i couldn't spank harder than him. He kept teasing me for what seemed to be like 30 minutes at the time. I couldn't stand it and i finally agreed to prove him wrong. We got a belt from my dad's closet and started to spank each other. It didn't end up so well because when I was about to spank him the stick that goes in the hole of the belt stabed my thumb an my finger started bleeding.

"Facing the future" p.39

Reflect on the following quotes frome the chapter. What does ecah mean to you?
1.)"Making ourselves feel ugly is not fun."..
This whole games is just designed to make us hate ourselves."

1. Making people feel bad about themselves isn't good.
2.)"Everyone judged everyone else based on their appearance. People who were taller got better jobs..people killed one another over stuff like having differenct skin color"(referring to when everyone was ugly)
2. People judge everyday and in order to get people to choose you in a job you must be pretty or something like that.
3.)People wanted to see who was better.
"It's the only way to make people equal"(becoming pretty)

"It's the only way to make people equal"(becoming pretty)
This way people wouldn't kill or want to be better than others.
3.) Becoming pretty is a way so nobody will make fun of others and a way to keep people from arguing about who's better.

Blog Post #7

"Wipeout" p.33
Think of another, book, movie or comic(exc) in which people use hover boards. How are they used? If possible, post a video of this.

Why do you think the new pretties don't come back to Uglyville to visit? Describe their physical and mental transformation into new pretties.
I think that the new pretties don't visit Uglyville because they think they're to pretty. They have so much fun and they forget about all their other friends in Uglyville. They have perfect, flawless skin, symetrical features, and are the perfect shape and size. They forget about the people that used to mean alot to them. After the operation they're so perfect if they go back they will feel out of place.

Blog Post #6 "Shay"p.23

Write a one paragraph summary of the chapter.
After Tally escapes from the "white tie" party she runs into someone. Tally thinks that this person is part of "New Pretty Town" , so she hides in the bushes.
Finally, Tally decides to come out from hiding and realizes that the person is not a pretty but an ugly just like her.

What have you learned about Shay?Is she like Tally? Make a prediction about what will happen between Tally and Shay.
Shay sneaks into New Pretty Town just like Tally to see her friends. They are similar because they both now trick and how to sneak aroung. I think that they will become friends, and do alot of things together.

"Best Friends Forever" p.11 blog post #5

Why do you think that "New Pretty Town" advocates bungee jumping?
I think they allow bungee jumping because some of the new pretties want to do something fun that includes an adrenaline rush . Others probably do it to prove that they're cool or something like that.

Bungee Jumping:
Ancient stories claim that bungee jumping history began when a wife who tricked her husband into plunging to his death by jumping from a tree with a vine tied to her feet(unbeknownst to her husband) This legend led men on the island of Vanuatu to begin jumping from trees with vines tied to their feet as a shadow of manhood.

"Best Friends Forever" p.11 blog post #4

Characterization of Tally: She's an ugly an almost sixteen so close to being a pretty. She's very daring because she risks going to visit Paris in "New Pretty Town" even though it could cost her her prettiness.
Characterization of Paris: Paris is sixteen and a pretty. He was friends with Tally when he was an ugly. His face is flawless and hes perfect.

How do you feel about the friendship of Tally and Paris? Are they true best friends? Why or why not?
I think that Tally and Paris are still friends because Paris tries to help Tally escape from "New Pretty Town". They are true best friends but it's kind of hard being friends when they live in different places.

"New Pretty Town"p.3 blog post#3

Find & quote one oxymoron from the chapter or ONE example of irony.
Irony
"But nothing had been beautiful since Peris turned pretty"

Why do you think Tally chose to wear a mask to the party that was deemed "white tie"?
Because she is an ugly not a preety so she has to hide her face because she might get in trouble if anyone finds out an ugly is sneaking into "New Pretty Town"

History of masks:
Humans have used masks for different reasons throughout time, from blending into scenery to standing out from other people. The main concept behind most masks, with the possible exception of funerary masks, is to hide a persons's identity. Masks have been used for religious purposes, for artistic purposes and just for fun purposes.

1 paragraph-Have you ever had a friend like Peris who abandoned your friendship after moving? Explain.

No, I have never had a friend like Peris who abandoned my friendship after leaving. I think it is because my friends haven't moved. All the people I know that have moved have been aquaintances not really friends. All of my friends have stayed.

Describe the following terms:
1. Interface ring- ring where someone is capable of knowing where you are and sort of like a tracking device. Gives you an identity.
2. Toothbrush pill- Pill that cleans your mouth like a tootbrush but is just a pill.
3.Cacophony- a big racket.
Before Reading Blog post #1

How do you define beauty? What would it be like if everyone was "beautiful"? I think beautiful means being flawless and perfect in everything you do. You try to the best of your ability to look perfect and act perfect.

If everyone was beautiful there would be no such thing as beauty because everyone would seem normal because everyone would look the same.

Post a picture of something you find beautiful, and something you find ugly and explain the reasoning behind these choices in a paragraph?

I choose a fairy as the picture I think is beautiful because fairies seem to have something graceful and sweet about them. Fairies seem like they are perfect little people that can fly. I choose the trash in the ocean as the thing I find ugly because it seems wrong to harm nature and make it look bad. It's as if you don't even care about living in your waste and other harmful things that may harm you and your body. Trash in the ocean can contaminate the water and kill the animals living in it.
